Lumen Technologies · employee perspective

At Lumen, plan history can change the retirement question.

Current savings, legacy pension components and employment transitions are different paths. The first step is establishing which documents and eligibility history belong to you.

Before a conversation

What to bring into focus

  1. Which 2026 401(k) document governs me—non-union SPD or my collective-bargaining agreement—and am I a Covered Employee for that purpose?
  2. If I am covered by the non-union SPD, am I deferring at least 6% of plan-eligible compensation in pre-tax and/or Roth contributions when the stated maximum match is a priority, and how does the annual true-up affect my payroll timing?
  3. Does my benefits record show a vested balance or accrued benefit under a specific Lumen Combined Pension Plan component, and what service, retirement date, and payment-form assumptions were used in the estimate?
  4. Am I actually eligible for retiree medical or life coverage, and how would my retirement date, dependent coverage, and Medicare timing change the result?
  5. If my employment ends or is affected by a reduction in force, what do my own written severance documents, applicable SPD/CBA, account statements, and beneficiary designations say before I elect a distribution or coverage change?

Lumen · layers to verify

Three layers of a changing benefits picture

01

Current payroll savings

Which savings-plan lane applies?

Lumen publishes distinct 2026 savings-plan materials for non-union and represented populations. The relevant Summary Plan Description or collective-bargaining agreement—not a coworker’s election—controls whether you are covered and how your account is treated. Confirm your payroll classification and governing document before modeling a match or changing contributions.

A current savings decision may involve pre-tax and Roth elections, employer contributions and the timing of an annual true-up under the applicable document. The public plan descriptions are a starting point, not your personal benefit determination.

02

Legacy and retiree cohorts

Is a legacy benefit actually on your record?

Lumen’s public disclosures describe pension and post-retirement arrangements for particular participant groups, while a Qwest component document illustrates how legacy eligibility can depend on hire date and employee classification. It is not sound to assume every Lumen employee has a pension or retiree medical coverage.

If a pension or retiree benefit appears in your record, request the named plan component, administrator estimate, service and vesting history, payment forms and coverage rules. Only after those facts are confirmed can a household income discussion use them responsibly.

03

Employment transition

What changes if employment ends?

Lumen’s departing-employee guide separates information relevant to all departing employees from additional sections for people who qualify for specified pension, disability or retiree benefits. That structure matters: leaving employment does not itself establish a benefit or a severance entitlement.

Before a departure, collect your plan statements, beneficiary records, any pension estimate, health-coverage materials and written separation documents. Compare distribution and coverage choices only after the administrator has confirmed the terms and the employment event.

Source trail & eligibility

Documented publicly. Confirm personally.

Official public sources describe programs, not your individual eligibility or award terms. Current plan documents and employer administrators control your circumstances.

  • The 2026 Lumen 401(k) Savings Plan SPD for non-union employees says Covered Employees are eligible to participate beginning on their hire date, with participation beginning as soon as administratively practicable after hire and affirmative enrollment.

    2026-10-05 (SPD issued January 1, 2026) · lumenbenefits.com ↗
  • The 2026 union 401(k) SPD says participation for a represented employee depends on whether the applicable collective-bargaining agreement provides it; temporary and seasonal employees are not Covered Employees under that SPD.

    2026-10-05 (SPD issued January 1, 2026) · lumenbenefits.com ↗
  • Lumen’s 2025 Form 10-K says its defined-benefit pension plans in aggregate cover a substantial portion of employees, with collectively bargained participants on negotiated schedules and other participants’ benefits based on service and compensation; post-retirement health and life benefits are for certain eligible retirees.

    2026-10-05 (Form 10-K filed February 20, 2026, for year ended December 31, 2025) · sec.gov ↗
  • Lumen’s March 2026 departing-employee guide separates provisions applying to all employees from a section applying only to employees eligible for disability, pension, retiree health care, or retiree life insurance; it says retiree-modeling output is not a final determination until termination status is processed through Payroll.

    2026-10-05 (guide issued March 2026) · lumenbenefits.com ↗
  • Union and non-union savings-plan documents are not interchangeable; employee classification matters.
  • Legacy pension and retiree-health programs are cohort-dependent and should not be inferred from the Lumen name alone.
